US May Walk out, if the Talks with North Korea Seem Not Fruitful

US President Donald Trump has made it clear that if the planned talks with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un are not fruitful he may walk out of the talks anytime. The announcement was made by the President at a joint media conference along with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who is now on a state visit to the US.

Trump also said that maximum pressure would be maintained on North Korea for nuclear disarmament. "Our campaign of maximum pressure will continue until North Korea denuclearises. As I've said before, there is a bright path available to North Korea when it achieves denuclearisation in a complete and verifiable and irreversible way. It would be a great day for them, it would be a great day for the world."

US President Donald Trump also said that if he feels the meeting is going to be successful only then he will participate, but if the meeting continues without any productive results he is going to quit. It is very clear that if North Korea doesn’t obey the US, the meeting is not going to bring out any clear result.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was with the US President during the press conference, said that he had requested President Trump to raise the issue of releasing Japanese citizens kidnapped by North Korea, during the talks.

In the 1970s and 1980’s, North Korea had kidnapped Japanese citizens and also admitted that they have abducted 13 Japanese citizens to use them to train their own spies. But Japan has claimed that the number of abducted citizens is much higher. It is one of the prominent issues, which has soured relations between the two countries over the years.

Three US citizens are also being held in North Korea. Donald Trump assured Japan, that the United States would work hard to try to bring the Japanese abductees home and also said, “we are likewise fighting very diligently to get the three American citizens back home”.

It is significant here to note that President Donald Trump has made the announcement, after the secret meeting between his most confidant, Secretary of State nominee and present Director of CIA Mike Pompeo with North Korean chief Kim Jong-un.

So it indicates that the US wants a clear message from North Korea before the talks start. At the same time, North Korea must assure something on the two main issues, North Korea’s agenda to pursue the development of nuclear weapons, against the UN sanctions and International law and the cases of Human right abuses within the country. Over which it is still silent. Till date, North Korea had carried out six nuclear tests and also threatened the US, time and again that it possesses missiles which can destroy the US in seconds.

It was after the exchange of so much of hard talks over the years, during the recent Winter Olympics in South Korea, US President Donald Trump stunned the world community by accepting an invite from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to meet. Since then the preparation for the meeting between the two arc rivals is the talk of the town.
