Vaping Without Warning: Ranbir Kapoor Faces NHRC Scrutiny in Bads of Bollywood

Ranbir Kapoor has found himself under scrutiny following his brief appearance in Aryan Khan’s Bads of Bollywood. The sequence in question features the Bollywood superstar using a vape without displaying a statutory health warning, leading to a complaint filed by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The controversial moment occurs in the final episode of the series, where Kapoor’s character is seen vaping. In response, the NHRC has raised concerns about the potential impact on impressionable viewers, particularly young audiences, citing the absence of a health warning as problematic.

The NHRC has formally approached the Mumbai Police Commissioner, urging the registration of an FIR against Kapoor, the producers of the series, and the streaming platform Netflix under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019. The Commission has also sent a letter to the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, demanding immediate action to prevent similar content from appearing on OTT platforms.

The issue has sparked renewed debate on the responsibility of celebrities and content creators in portraying substance use. Critics argue that the normalization of such behavior, particularly without appropriate warnings, could have adverse effects on public health perceptions.

While Bads of Bollywood has generally been met with positive reviews, this controversy has taken center stage.
