Legendary music artist Bappi Lahiri passed away last night in a Mumbai hospital. He was 69. 

The singer was hospitalized for a month. He was released on Monday however his health deteriorated again on Tuesday. 

Dr Deepak Namjoshi, director of CritiCare hospital, told PTI that he died due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) shortly before midnight. He had other health complications as well. 

Besides being a well-known singer, Bappi was a composer, politician, and record producer. He became popular for synthesizing disco music in Indian cinema. He gained immense fame in the 80s and 90s with popular soundtracks such as ‘Disco Dancer’, ‘Namak Halal’, ‘Dance Dance’, ‘Sharaabi’, and ‘Naya Kadam.’

Born as Alokesh Lahiri, the veteran singer was known for singing his own compositions too such as ‘Koi Yahan Naache’ from Disco Dancer and ‘Pyar Bina Chain Kahan’ from Saheb. 

He hailed from a family of musicians and singers. Both his parents were singers and he was their only child. Singer Kishore Kumar was his maternal uncle. 

Famous celebrities remembered the music artist on Twitter: 

Kajol wrote: “Today we lost the disco king, Bappi Da you were not only an amazing music composer and singer but also a beautiful and happy soul. End of an Era. May your soul rest in peace. #RIP #BappiLahiri”

The actress was also seen in his residence to offer condolences. 

Manushi Chiller tweeted: “Thank you for the wonderful melodies. Grew up listening to your songs. We will miss you, #BappiLahiri ji. Deepest condolences and prayers for the family.”

Adnan Sami wrote: “He was India’s First ‘ROCK STAR’!!

He was full of love & generosity!

Besides being a popular artist, Bappi Lahiri was known to be a humble soul with a lively vibe. Apart from his popular disco electronic music, he’ll be forever remembered for his signature look that generally comprised of heavy gold chains, shiny cardigans, rings and other accessories. 

The singer’s cremation ceremony will take place after the arrival of his son from LA. He is survived by his wife, son Bappa and daughter Rema.
