Vidya Balan Celebrates 20 Years as Parineeta Returns to Theatres
Vidya Balan celebrates 20 years in cinema as Parineeta returns in a restored 8K version, honoring director Pradeep Sarkar’s vision while highlighting the importance of preserving timeless cinematic treasures.
New Delhi: Marketing two decades in Indian Cinema, Vidya Balan reflected on her journey in her debut film Parineeta is set to return to the big screen in a restored format on its 20th anniversary. In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, the actress described the project as her “dream debut”.
“I realise that I was so fortunate to have had the kind of debut I did in Parineeta. It really was a dream debut. Where do you get to play the titular role in your very first film? It's Sarat Chandra Chatterjee's novel; it's Vinod Chopra, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Rekha Ji...and Pradeep Sarkar, the man who had faith in me at a time when I didn't know if I did. Everything about Parineeta is Dada. Every frame, for lack of a better word, it reeks of him. It's his vision,” Vidya shared.
She further added, “He used to storyboard every shot, and I had seen the storyboard of the entire film before we started shooting it. We also did an audio board, and then when you see the film, it's mesmerising. I look at myself, and I am like, 'Oh wow! Who is she?' That's Dada for you. That's what he did with me, the way he presented me, the way he moulded me. The way he got me to perform, the music, and everything was so magical about Parineeta. Everyone deserves a director like Dada.”
The return of Parineeta is being curated with immense care. PVR INOX, India’s largest cinema exhibitor, will showcase the re-release, allowing audiences to relive its timeless charm. Adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1914 Bengali classic, the film has now undergone meticulous restoration by Prasad Film Labs.
Adding another milestone, Vinod Chopra Films has become the pioneering production house in India to restore its complete film library in 8K resolution, enhanced with remastered 5.1 surround sound. The restoration journey itself was a laborious yet fascinating process, spanning over four years. A part of the technical rejuvenation was handled at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy, a globally acclaimed laboratory celebrated for conserving cinematic masterpieces.
This anniversary not only symbolizes Vidya Balan’s luminous trajectory in the industry but also highlights the evolving importance of preserving stands as an evocative reminder of storytelling brilliance, artistic devotion, and the symphony of creativity that transcends eras.
The special re-release marks not only two decades of Vidya Balan’s remarkable journey in Indian cinema but also the golden jubilee of Vinod Chopra Films.
Originally released in 2005, Parineeta earned widespread acclaim, securing both National and Filmfare Awards. The film continues to be cherished for its soulful music, compelling narrative, and memorable performances.
The newly restored version will return to select theatres across India on August 29, 2025, for a limited run of one week, offering audiences a chance to relive its timeless charm.
