A viral India Gate clip showing an Indian man’s awkward approach to Korean tourists sparked widespread backlash, raising debates on respect, boundaries, education, and the importance of responsible behaviour towards visitors.

Viral India Gate Video Sparks Backlash Over Tourist Interaction

A short video featuring an Indian man and two Korean tourists at Delhi’s India Gate has stirred controversy online, quickly going viral for reasons that left viewers unsettled. The Instagram clip captures the man approaching two women visiting the monument. He greets them with unusual words, saying, "Hello, excuse me, my dream, punch, punch," seemingly aiming for a friendly fist bump.

Perplexed, one of the tourists asked, "You want to punch me?" while another person recording clarified, "Fist bump." The women eventually went along with the gesture.

However, the exchange soon shifted. The man expressed his “other wish” to hug one of the tourists. Although one agreed, her stiff posture and hesitant reaction revealed obvious discomfort during the brief contact.

Before leaving, the man added, "You are so cute. I love you," extending his hand as the woman laughed, possibly to defuse the awkwardness. The video was posted with the caption: "Indian local meets Korean girls."

Though brief, the encounter triggered a cascade of criticism. Many users condemned the behaviour, describing it as disrespectful, intrusive, and inappropriate. One comment captured the overall sentiment: "Sorry from India."

Another pointed out the discomfort of the tourist, stating, "That girl held her breath as she hugged him." Frustration mounted as users criticised the man’s persistence, with one writing, "First a fist bump, then a hug, then an 'I love you'? This is harassment, not humour."

Several urged the need to respect boundaries. A concerned user remarked, "Maintain distance from these types of people in India." Another expressed personal mortification: "I felt embarrassed seeing this video."

The clip also sparked larger debates. One comment stressed, "That is why education is important," while another called for accountability: "These two men should be punished by the police for disrupting the Korean girls."

Tourism has been an integral part of India’s cultural landscape, with millions of international travellers visiting each year. According to government data, the Foreign Tourist Arrival (FTA) in 2024 stood at 99.52 lakh. The top countries contributing visitors over the past five years included the US, Bangladesh, the UK, Australia, and Canada.

As this viral episode demonstrates, every small interaction between locals and travellers shapes global perception. Acts of kindness can strengthen hospitality, but careless or unsettling encounters may lead to embarrassment and reputational harm. Upholding boundaries, showing courtesy, and nurturing respect remain essential in sustaining India’s image as a welcoming destination.
