Visa at Risk: US Embassy Warns against Criminal Acts after Indian Woman Caught Shoplifting

In a significant advisory, the US Embassy in India has issued a stern warning to international visitors, particularly Indian nationals, about the consequences of committing crimes such as assault, theft, or burglary while in the United States. This cautionary note follows a recent incident in Illinois where an Indian woman was allegedly caught stealing merchandise worth approximately ₹1.1 lakh ($1,300) from a Target store.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy stated, "Committing assault, theft, or burglary in the United States won't just cause you legal issues – it could lead to your visa being revoked and make you ineligible for future US visas. The United States values law and order and expects foreign visitors to follow all US laws."

The woman reportedly spent over seven hours inside the retail store, methodically selecting items, checking her phone, and meandering through various aisles before attempting to exit the premises without paying. The suspicious activity was observed by store employees, one of whom eventually confronted her, a moment captured on surveillance and later circulated online.
A YouTube video, which includes police bodycam footage, details the confrontation and subsequent response. According to the clip’s description, "On May 1, 2025, police were called to Target after a woman spent hours inside the store stealing items, ultimately attempting to walk out with thousands of dollars in unpaid merchandise. This is footage of the events that followed."
In the video, a Target employee tells officers, "We saw this woman roaming around the store for the last 7 hours. She was picking up items, checking her phone, moving between aisles, and eventually tried to walk out the west gate without paying."
Despite the woman offering to pay for the goods at the moment of confrontation, she was taken into custody and transported to the police station. During her interrogation, a female officer remarked, "Are you allowed to steal things in India? I did not think so." The accused is now facing potential felony charges, with formal legal proceedings expected.
According to the government, theft, regardless of amount, infringes upon multiple state laws and can escalate to federal offenses under the US code. Terms like larceny, embezzlement, burglary, and robbery represent nuanced yet grave criminal classifications under American jurisprudence.
