Vivek Oberoi Apologizes and Deletes Meme on Aishwarya Rai

Vivek Oberoi Apologizes and Deletes Meme on Aishwarya Rai

Actor Vivek Oberoi has now realised that sharing the offensive meme featuring Aishwarya Rai was not the right thing to do. The actor earlier refused to apologise as he believed that he didn’t do anything wrong. He said, “I have no problem in apologising, but tell me what wrong have I done? If I have done something wrong I will apologise, I don't think I have done anything wrong.”

The ‘Saathiya’ actor shared a meme featuring three pictures of Aishwarya Rai. In one, Rai was featured with Salman Khan, second with Vivek Oberoi and the third with husband Abhishek Bachchan and daughter Aradhya. Each picture was linked to opinion polls, exit polls and the results respectively.

He captioned the image, “Haha! creative! No politics here....just life (sic).”

Now, however, the actor has deleted the tweet. Explaining his decision to delete the tweet, the actor wrote, “Sometimes what appears to be funny and harmless at first glance to one, may not be so to others. I have spent the last 10 years empowering more than 2000 underprivileged girls, I can't even think of being disrespectful to any woman ever.”

He said, “Even if one woman is offended by my reply to the meme, it calls for remedial action. Apologies tweet deleted.”

The actor earlier confessed that he laughed at the meme as it had a humorous touch to it and he appreciated the person for their creativity. He claimed that people were making a huge cry out of something funny.

The actor earlier failed to realise that he was being taken to task because he lent credibility to a meme that threw light on Aishwarya’s personal life. Her personal life was being mocked upon and was being compared to politics through the “misogynistic” meme.

Vivek Oberoi who supposedly dated Aishwarya Rai previously didn’t create the tasteless meme but he shared it. The meme dragged someone’s personal life onto social media. Besides, the meme dragged a child that is Aishwarya’s daughter also into the picture who has no clue what the meme is all about. This is why Vivek was questioned by the National Commission of Women. The Maharashtra State Commission for Women also said that they’ll issue a notice to him.

The good part is that Vivek has apologized for his mistake and has resolved to amend his actions if it offends any woman. As for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, she has remained silent on the meme row.

Speaking of memes, recently a political activist Priyanka Sharma was arrested for sharing a morphed image of West Bengal CM- Mamata Banerjee. These two incidents indicate that authorities are not taking things lightly when it comes to sharing insulting memes that mock or injure anyone’s dignity.
