Apart from these star performers who lighted up the opening ceremony, former Brazilian striker Ronaldo entered the turf with the official ball that was earlier sent to the space station. However, he invited a child to take the opening kick who passed it to Zabivaka, the wolf that is the official mascot of FIFA 2018.
The way Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered his speech, announced the biggest football extravaganza officially open and the result of opening match - all indicate a strong underlying prediction about the tournament fate, according to many!
Putin said, “Whatever traditions we hold, football brings us together in one single team and we are united by our affection for this spectacular and vibrant game,”.
The President expressed Russia’s passion for football mentioning, “This major sporting event is being held in Russia for the first time, and we are sincerely happy about it. In our country, football is not just the most popular sport. People genuinely love football. And it was love at first sight, from the first official match that took place in Russia in 1897.”
“It is in this unity, which bends neither to differences in language, nor in ideology, nor in faith, that the great power of football, of sport in general, the power of its humanistic principles, lies.
Our task is to preserve this power, this unity for future generations, for the sake of developing sport and strengthening peace and mutual understanding among people.”
President Putin concluded his speech with “I wish all the teams success and an unforgettable experience to fans. Welcome to Russia.”
“Welcome to Russia” and ‘Love’ were spelled out on the ground by performers which looked mesmerizing.
The vibrant ceremony followed by the opening match between host nation Russia and Saudi Arabia ended in 5-0.
It could be this favoring result in the very beginning that influenced many to think that this time it’s Russia! The match favorites this year have been Brazil, Spain, Germany, and France, and after the winning streak yesterday, for many Russia is arising as a strong contender.
