After a long hiatus the winners of the 67th National Film Awards for the films released in 2019 was announced in New Delhi on Monday. 

The event was organized by the Directorate of Film Festivals which comes under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The ceremony was to be held in May last year however the event was delayed due to the Covid -19 pandemic. 

Popular names from the film industry like Manoj Bajpai, Kangana Ranaut and late actor Sushant Singh bagged the coveted awards. 

The National Awards provide a platform and encourage Indian film artists from all corners of the country to explore and celebrate creativity. 

According to one of the jury members more than 50 percent of the films were by first time directors.

‘Chhichhore’ starring late actor Sushant Singh Rajput bagged the Best Hindi Film. Kangana Ranaut bagged the best actress award for her performance in films like ‘Manikarnika’ and ‘Panga.’  This would be her fourth National Award. ‘Manikarnika’ not only features Kangana, she has also co-directed it.

There was a tie for the Best Actor Award. Manoj Bajpai won the Best Actor award for his performance in ‘Bhonsle’ while ‘Dhanush’ won the same award for his performance in Tamil film ‘Asuran.’

‘Asuran’ won the best Tamil film while ‘Jersey’ won for the best Telugu film.
