Young Girls Capture Woman on Camera Who Chastised Them for Wearing Short Dress

A video recorded by a young woman by the name of Shivani Gupta showing a group of young women confronting a middle-aged woman in a Gurgaon mall has gone viral. The video was widely shared on Facebook and Instagram. What was most shocking about the incident as narrated by Shivani Gupta is that the elderly woman allegedly asked men in the restaurant to rape them as Shivani was dressed in a short dress.

The bunch of young women then decided to corner the elderly woman at a shopping Centre in the same mall and asked her to apologize. The middle-aged woman, however, refused to do so adding further heat to the altercation.

The young women wanted her to discuss the issue on camera but she again refused. They kept following her in the store seeking an apology. "Apologise right now. I will make your life a living hell if you don't apologize, I promise you that. I will make you viral,” one girl said.  In the video, the staff of the store also came to intervene however the issue couldn’t be resolved.

Another woman who was also in the mall intervened and supported the young girls by asking the elderly woman to apologize. She cited the example of her own daughters saying that she allows them to wear whatever they want. She also chastised the elderly woman for acting irresponsibly by asking other men to rape.

This video is enough to prove that the mindsets of certain citizens in our nation is still distorted. Women are still judged for their choice of attire. They are still “victim shamed” most of the time. In this case, however, the young women turned the tables and shamed the woman.

This incident has sparked a debate and raises several questions about our society. Why did the elderly woman raise the topic about dressing in a public place like an eating joint where individuals generally come to relax and to gorge on food? Restaurants are places where individuals generally turn up dressed casually.  Not to say it was a street where Shivani Gupta might be prone to hooligans nor was she alone that the Aunty had to be so concerned about her safety.

Why did the elderly woman ask other men to rape the young girls?  Isn’t she herself encouraging rape culture by doing so? Most importantly, she spoke to Shivani Gupta in a condescending tone.

The identity of the elderly lady hasn’t been disclosed. Apparently, she’s a school teacher. Her last words on the phone camera were “Hello guys, these ladies want to wear short to short dress to encourage all to see them. Theek hai? Wow, very good. All the ladies wear the shorter dress or naked to (be) raped. Hi all, if you are the parents, please control the girls (sic),”

The elderly woman needs to get facts right that it is not the length of the attire but the mindset of the rapist that gives rise to rapes. How else would you explain rapes of eight-year-old girls like Asifa Bano? Sometimes it is the people whom we believe would progressively lead the nation by example turn out to be the barriers of society.
