Young Woman Killed Due to Dowry; Case Shocks the State of Kerala

In a shocking case in Kerala a young woman Vismaya Nair, 24, was found hanging in the bathroom in her husband’s home.
Vismaya, an Ayurveda medicine student, was allegedly tortured by her husband Kiran Kumar and in-laws for dowry. The couple got married last year in June. Kiran Kumar is an assistant motor vehicle inspector at Kerala’s transport department.
This incident has left the state of Kerala in a state of shock.
Through Vismaya’s Whatsapp messages it was ascertained that she was dragged by her hair and stamped on her face by her husband Kiran Kumar.
“My sister’s death is murder. Because she was a victim of dowry harassment, was facing a lot. She had to even stay at her parents’ home for a while,” said Vismaya’s brother Vijith.
According to the victim’s father Thrivikraman Nair, the family had given Kiran 100 gold coins, over one acre of land, and a car worth Rs. 10 lakhs as dowry.
He also said that Kiran was not satisfied with the SUV they gifted him and he instead wanted cash.
“He had beaten Vismaya in front of us after coming to our home during midnight last January,” Mr Nair was quoted as saying by Press Trust of India.
She went back with him on Kiran’s birthday on March 17 after he picked her up from college. She did so despite her father telling her earlier not to return to her in-laws’ home.
After Vismaya returned home, she remained in touch with her mother. Both the families were to meet just three days later to come to a compromise concerning a police complaint filed against Kiran.
“The accused has been taken into custody. If there are any others who are involved we will identify them and charge them under relevant sections of the law,” said Loknath Behera, Kerala Police chief.
Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the act. He wrote, “As a society, we need to reform the prevailing marriage system. Marriage must not be a pompous show of the family's social status and wealth. Parents have to realise that the barbaric dowry system degrades our daughters as commodities. We must treat them better, as human beings.”
Kiran Kumar has been arrested and has been charged with IPC section 304 (B), which pertains to dowry death.
