Yuvraj Singh Arrested and Released on Bail in Connection with Casteist Remark

Cricketer Yuvraj Singh was arrested for a brief period in Hisar, Haryana over a casteist remark made last year in an Instagram chat video. He was later released on interim bail the police said. 

 “Yuvraj Singh came to Hansi on Saturday and we made a formal arrest. He was released on bail bond after a few hours,” said DSP (Hansi) Vinod Shankar.

The casteist remark was made against cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal during a live Instagram video with ex-teammate Rohit Sharma. The discussion was about Chahal’s Tik Tok videos. 

The complaint was filed by Rajat Kalsan in February and a case was registered under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. An FIR was filed as per the directions of the court. 

Hansi SP Nitika Gahlout said that Yuvraj Singh has joined investigations as per the directions of the court.  Singh was booked under sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 153 B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) of the IPC and Section 3 (1) (u) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention and Atrocities) Act.

Singh has approached the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking quashing of the FIR filed against him. 

Yuvraj Singh had earlier apologized in a tweet saying, “I understand that while I was having a conversation with my friends, I was misunderstood, which was unwarranted. However, as a responsible Indian I want to say that if I have unintentionally hurt anybody’s sentiments or feelings, I would like to express regret for the same.”

He said, “if I have unintentionally hurt anybody's sentiments or feelings I would like to express regret for the same. “My love for India and all its people is eternal”, he further stated.
