Zoya Akhtar to Direct Musical Drama on the Famous Archies Comics

Film Director Zoya Akhtar has announced an interesting project that is bringing the world of Archies Comics to the current generation in the form of a musical drama.

The film which is partnered with Netflix will be set in 1960’s India.

Zoya Akhtar’s company Tiger Baby will co-produce it with Graphic India.

The director expressed that she is very excited about the project as the popular series was a “large part of her childhood and teenage years.”

“The characters are iconic and globally loved, which is also why I am a little nervous. I have to make sure the film stokes the nostalgia of a generation that grew up on the comic and yet resonates with the young adults today,” Zoya Akhtar said in a statement.

Archie comics CEO and Publisher Jon Goldwater expressed, “It's a huge source of pride that the Archie Comics characters and stories resonate with fans globally, and especially in India, for more than 50 years. We are thrilled to partner with Netflix and trust Zoya Akhtar and her creative team to deliver a truly unique and exciting take on Archie and friends through the lens of Indian cinema. We know that these characters have global appeal and translating them into other settings and cultures is just the start of what we have planned for future multimedia adaptations.”

Archie Comics revolves around the lives of teens Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge and Jughead Jones and the issues they encountered while growing up in Riverdale.  The series emphasized on the camaderie and adventures of the teens.

The comics gained immense popularity in the 90s and resonated with the teenagers globally of that period.

Fans would definitely be curious to know who would slip into the roles of playboy Archie, Betty, Veronica and comical Jughead.

The cast of the film is yet to be confirmed.

Going by Zoya’s previous impressive projects like ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ and ‘Gully Boy’ that captured the attention of the masses, this musical drama also seems promising.
