BBC announced on Wednesday that it would launch an investigation on how it obtained the 1995 “famed” interview of Princess Diana that revealed details about her troubled marriage with Prince Charles.
According to Diana’s brother Charles Spencer, Martin Bashir showed him fake documents to persuade his sister to take part in the interview.
He told Daily Mail that the reporter had made “lurid claims” about Queen Elizabeth II and other Royals. Even Earl Spencer told Daily Mail that the reporter told a string of lies about Royal Family members to win his as well as his sister’s trust.
Bashir showed him false bank statements stating that two courtiers were being paid by security services to spy on Diana and her whereabouts. After revealing fake evidence the reporter was finally successful in bagging the interview with Lady Diana. Earl Spencer told Daily Mail, “If it were not for me seeing these statements, I would not have introduced Bashir to my sister”, reported Daily Mail.
Martin Bashir was not so well known during that period however his career escalated after the interview with the Princess.
22.8 million people had watched the November 1995 interview in which she gives details about her controversial marriage to Prince Charles.
BBC has announced that the former Supreme Court Judge Lord John Dyson who was the Master of the Rolls and second most senior Judge in England and Wales will overhead the probe.
“This is an important investigation which I will start straight away,” Lord Dyson said in a statement, reported BBC. “I will ensure it is both thorough and fair.”
Meanwhile Martin Bashir has not responded to the allegations. He is currently BBC’s Religion Editor who is recovering from a heart surgery and had recently contracted coronavirus.
