National Award-Winning Actress Surekha Sikri Passes Away

Veteran actor Surekha Sikri has died at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest. She had been unwell for several months, and had suffered a brain stroke in 2020.

The veteran actor’s career spanned theatre, films and television. She made her debut with 1978 political drama film Kissa Kursi Ka and played author-backed roles across films in various industries. She received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress thrice, including Tamas (1988), Mammo (1995) and Badhaai Ho (2018). She was last seen in director Zoya Akhtar's short film in the Netflix anthology Ghost Stories.

She gained prominence for her performance in the primetime soap opera Balika Vadhu. Her performance in the Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Badhaai Ho drew immense acclaim and was seen as somewhat of a career comeback.

Last year, the veteran actress was admitted to hospital after suffering a brain stroke. This was the second time that Sikri had suffered a stroke, after November 2018. She was rushed to Criticare Hospital and was in ICU.
