The US Pride Month started on June 1, which honours the LGBTQ community while commemorating the New York’s Stonewall riots, which took place in June 1969. This historic event later proved to be the turning point in the movement for equal rights.

In a media interview to Buzzfeed News, Jiwandeep Kohli said, “A few years ago I saw a photo of another Sikh man at a pride parade who had a few colours in his turban. I was looking at that and I realized the way I tie mine, it had the exact right number of layers to make a rainbow”.

In the Pride March, many participants were wondering and asking Jiwandeep where they can get their own rainbow turban. He in his response to them said that the turbans were the responsibility for Sikhs and it’s not the same as throwing on a rainbow hat.

As he says, “I wouldn’t want people to have the impression that I’m just wearing it as an accessory. A turban is a sign to the world that you’re a person the world can turn to for help”.

Apart from participating in Pride March, the neuroscientist also has a passion for cooking. He also runs a website popularly known as “Bearded Baker Co”, where he shares his culinary skills along with new recipes for those, who want to give his food a try.
