Flood in Venice, Worst in 50 Years

The Venetian waters have turned against its picturesque, historical city, as Venetian islands have been hit by the worst flooding in 50 years.

As per the latest updates, about 45% of the city is under floodwater. One of the tourists’ favourite spots like St. Mark’s Square are underwater, even the crypt of St. Mark’s Basilica was flooded.

As the situation went quite out of control, city Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has called for a state of emergency saying, “Venice is on its knees,”.

Local reports confirm, an elderly man was found dead in the floods. Reportedly, the man was trying to run electric pumps at his home on Tuesday night when Venice was struck by such ravaging high tide.

Since 1966, the City of Canals has never witnessed such calamitous inundation. Built on more than 100 islands, Venice follows the only communication route of canals with no roads. This ancient city is not only one of the much preferred and visited tourist spots in the world but also, known as the City of Love.

Magnum gothic palaces, exquisite artistic impressions from the Renaissance period, Byzantine mosaics and the unparalleled gondola ride through its timeless alleys take one back to the majestic age-old centuries of kings and prophets, in a wink.

From stalwarts like Vicent Van Gough’s paintings to William Shakespeare’s play ‘The Merchant of Venice’ and numerous arts and films… Venice scintillated like a timeless beauty in every bit of those.

However, this catastrophic flash flood has been able to make enormous damage to the Venetian beauties, and approximately it would take hundreds of millions of euros to restore it.
