‘Little Women’, the onscreen adaptation of an outstandingly popular 19th century novel has been lately catching the headlines for the revelation of its behind the scene looks, and the media is loving it. Starring the beautiful Emma Watson and the Meryl Streep the film is directed by Greta Gerwig and is the eighth film adaptation of the 1868 novel of the same name.





Emma Watson has shared the sneak peeks from the sets of ‘Little Women’, and each of its frames is undoubtedly beautiful.






In two of them, Greta Gerwig herself can be seen describing the shots to the characters, one of which is with Meryl Streep in a black mourning gown.




The origin of this timeless story, however, dates back to 1868 when American novelist  Louisa May Alcott wrote ‘Little Women’ in two volumes published in ‘68 and ‘69, respectively titled ‘Little Women’ and ‘Good Wives’. The plot thrives on the growing up of the four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy in the backdrop of the Civil War in America. It encloses their journey from childhood to adulthood and womanhood, flowing through the different experiences life offers, including, love!

The coming of age drama is told to be loosely based on the life of Louisa herself and her three sisters. According to scholars, ‘Little Women’ can be classified as an autobiographical or a semi-autobiographical book.


Written for girls, ‘Little Women’ although may had been read as a romantic novel and seen as a piece of quest on paper, “...It has been read as a family drama that validates virtue over wealth".


Greta Gerwig’s version of the novel is going to be the eighth feature film adaptation, as its previous renditions took place in the following years, 1917, 1918 which were silent and then, 1933, 1949, 1978, 1994 and a tribute in 2017.


In 1912, ‘Little Women’ was adapted for the stage, for the very first time indeed. Numerous times, the novel had been considered for television series, including four times for BBC itself.

‘Little Women’ 2019 adaptation casts Emma Watson as Meg March, Saoirse Ronan as Jo March, Florence Pug as Amy March, Eliza Scanlen as Beth March and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.


Produced by  Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Regency Enterprises and Pascal Pictures ‘Little Women’ promises to be a Christmas present, for its release is scheduled on December 25.
