‘The Beloved’ Star Javier Bardem Speaks Against Toxic Masculinity and Power Politics

Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem used the Cannes Film Festival spotlight to speak out against what he described as “toxic masculinity,” both in cinema and in global politics. While promoting his latest film The Beloved, Bardem reflected on the toxic male behaviour portrayed in the story and said such attitudes continue to shape real-world conflicts and personal relationships.

Directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, The Beloved follows a filmmaker whose strained relationship with his daughter resurfaces when she joins his newest project. Bardem explained that the character represents a generation raised to equate masculinity with control, dominance, and emotional repression — ideas he believes society must move beyond.

During the film’s press conference at Cannes, Bardem expanded the conversation beyond the movie itself. He criticized world leaders, arguing that forceful displays of power and rivalry contribute to violence and instability across the world. According to Bardem, this mindset fuels conflicts in war sensitive regions.

The actor, known for openly expressing his political views, acknowledged that speaking publicly can carry risks, especially when family and career are involved. Still, he said growing awareness around harmful masculine behavior gives him hope that these patterns can eventually change.

Bardem has long been vocal about humanitarian issues, including the situation in Gaza, and noted that despite his outspoken opinions, he continues to receive opportunities in the film industry — something he sees as a sign that attitudes may slowly be evolving.
