How Scrabbl uses AI

We use AI tools in parts of our newsroom. This page explains where, and the limits we put on them, so you can judge what you are reading.

What AI does here

• Finding stories. We use automated tools to monitor news feeds, wire indexes and primary sources, and to spot stories that several independent outlets are reporting.
• Drafting. For some news reports, an AI model produces a first draft from the sources our newsroom has gathered.
• Checking. We use AI to cross-check a draft's claims against those sources and to flag anything unsupported for an editor.
• Editing support. Headline suggestions, summaries and routine copy-editing.

What AI does not do

• It does not publish. Every article drafted with AI assistance is reviewed by a person before it goes live, and that person is accountable for it.
• It does not invent sources, quotations or facts. Claims must trace to a source in the article.
• It does not write under a human byline. Articles produced this way carry the Scrabbl News byline, which identifies the newsroom rather than an individual.
• It does not generate images that are presented as photographs of real events.
• It does not interview people, witness events or verify anything on its own.

Sources and credit

Reports produced this way are built from several published sources, which are named and linked in the article. We summarise and synthesise reporting; we do not republish another outlet's article as our own.

Why we do it

It lets a small newsroom cover more ground and publish faster, while people keep the decisions that matter: what is worth covering, whether it stands up, and how it is framed.
