13-Year-Old Swims for Hours to Save Family from Ocean Ordeal

A 13-year-old Australian boy, Austin Appelbee, is being hailed as a hero after an extraordinary act of courage saved his mother and two younger siblings from being lost at sea off the coast of Western Australia.

The dramatic ordeal unfolded on January 30 while the family was on holiday in Quindalup, a coastal town about 125 kilometres south of Perth. What began as a peaceful day on the water quickly turned dangerous when the family, using hired paddleboards and a kayak, was swept away from the shore of Geographe Bay by strong winds and rough seas.The family included Austin Appelbee, his mother Joanne (47), brother Beau (12), and sister Grace (8).

As conditions worsened, the teenager made a split-second decision that would prove lifesaving. Climbing into a kayak, he attempted to paddle back toward shore but was soon overwhelmed by the churning waves. Realising there was no other choice, he entered the water and began an exhausting swim back to land.

For the first two hours, he swam wearing a life jacket, fighting fatigue and powerful currents. When the jacket started to slow his progress, he removed it and pushed on for another two hours, relying on sheer determination to keep going. After finally reaching shore, the boy collapsed from exhaustion.

But the ordeal was far from over. Summoning the last of his strength, he ran approximately two kilometres along the coastline until he found a phone and raised the alarm at around 6 p.m.

A large-scale rescue operation was immediately launched, involving multiple agencies, helicopters, and marine rescue vessels. More than two hours later, at about 8:30 p.m., rescuers located the boy’s mother and siblings nearly 14 kilometres offshore. They were clinging to a single paddleboard in the fading light, exhausted but alive.

Authorities said the family’s survival was largely due to their use of life jackets, which helped them stay afloat for hours in treacherous conditions.

“Thankfully, all three people were wearing life jackets, which contributed to their survival,” said Inspector James Bradley of the Southwest District Office. “The actions of the 13-year-old boy cannot be praised highly enough — his determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings.”

Paul Bresland, commander of Naturaliste Volunteer Marine Rescue, described the teenager’s efforts as “superhuman.”

The boy’s mother, Joanne Appelbee, later spoke about the agonising decision to send her son to get help.

“Asking my 13-year-old to swim for hours through dangerous water was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made,” she told the ABC. “But I knew he was the strongest, and I knew he could do it. I couldn’t leave the younger kids at sea, so I had to send somebody.”

At an age when most children are just beginning their teenage years, the boy demonstrated extraordinary courage, presence of mind, and resilience — turning a terrifying situation into a remarkable story of survival.
