AI to Be Used for Earth Monitoring, ESA Launches Satellite with AI Features

August 16th marked a historic event when Φsat-2 was launched through SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. The launch of the satellite is a drastic change in the process of earth observation which was previously done manually. However, in the case of Φsat-2, the satellite is equipped with Artificial intelligence and Multi-spectrum camera based on which the earth monitoring can be improved.

Φsat-2 camera is the future of prediction, unlike the traditional approach where the raw data is sent directly to the earth post where the images are processed. This included significant issues such as downlinking or a cloud being a barrier to transmitting the information. In this case, the Images will be real-time so that real-time observation can be made. The AI feature helps to provide clear and concise images.

Innovative methods and developments have been used on Φsat-2 where a cloud detection app has been installed, developed by KP labs, the feature helps in eliminating the obscuring clouds and provides a clear image of the earth. Sat2map is used to convert the images into detailed pictures which cover the streets and the roads.

Even more features will be added on Φsat-2 which will detect the marine anomaly and wildfire protection. The AI has been used to detect real-time images and take actions that can reduce vulnerable events. The project is led by Open Cosmos and is supported by various partners.
