Assam’s Silchar Breaks 132-Year Rainfall Record amid Widespread Northeast Deluge
Silchar breaks a 132-year rainfall record with 415.8 mm in 24 hours, triggering widespread floods across Northeast India, affecting thousands in Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and Meghalaya.
Silchar, Assam’s second-largest city, has witnessed a historic and unprecedented cloudburst. On June 1, the city recorded 415.8mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, smashing a 132-year-old record set in 1893, when Silchar had received 290.3mm in a single day. According to the India Meteorological Department(IMD), the extreme rainfall is attributed to an unstable atmospheric setup triggered by upper-air cyclonic circulations and low-level troughs. The volatile system stretches from central Assam to Arunachal Pradesh, connected to a larger trough running from East Uttar Pradesh.
Silchar is no stranger to climatic distress. In 2022, the city endured devastating floods due to a dyke breach at Bethkundi on the Barak River. That disaster submerged nearly 90% of the city, which lies just a Kilometre from the dyke. The current rainfall has raised fresh fears of inundation and infrastructure vulnerability.
But Silchar is not alone in facing nature’s fury. In the past three days, at least 34 people have lost their lives due to floods and landslides across the northeastern states, including Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.
Mizoram witnessed 1,102% above-normal rainfall on May 31, an extraordinary anomaly. In Meghalaya, consistent downpours from May 28 to June 1 have deluged districts like Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and Mawsynram. Sohra recorded 796 mm, while Mawsynram registered 774.5 mm of rainfall over five days. On May 30 alone, Ramakrishna Mission (RKM) Sohra received a staggering 378.4 mm, contributing to a total of 993.6 mm in just five days.
Other affected zones include Khilehriat and Pynursla, each logging cumulative rainfall above 500mm, turning roads into torrents and triggering cumulative rainfall above 500mm, turning roads into torrents and triggering frequent landslides and erosion.
As authorities race to respond, rescue operations are underway, and state governments are on high alert. Meteorologists warn that further precipitation anomalies may follow if these erratic patterns persist.
