Atletico Madrid Beat 10-Man Real Madrid 2-1 in Dramatic LaLiga Derby

The Madrid derby delivered everything expected from one of Spanish football’s fiercest rivalries. Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid 2-1 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday, overcoming a tense first half and taking full advantage after Real were reduced to 10 men.

Alejandro Grimaldo opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Jonathan David doubled Atletico’s advantage. Antonio Rudiger pulled one back late for Real Madrid, but Diego Simeone’s side held firm to claim three crucial points.

The result moved Atletico Madrid above their city rivals in the LaLiga table. Atletico climbed to second with 16 points, while Real Madrid remained on 15, five points behind leaders Barcelona.

A Tense First Half Sets the Tone

The opening 45 minutes were packed with physical challenges but offered little in front of goal. Both teams struggled to create clear opportunities, with the intensity of the derby often overshadowing the attacking quality.

One of the biggest talking points came when Jude Bellingham and Cristian Romero collided in a challenge. Giuliano Simeone drove forward on the right before sending a low cross into the area. Jonathan David reacted quickly to finish and make it 2-0. The goal was David's third in his first three LaLiga appearances for Atletico, giving the summer signing an immediate impact in his new colours.

Atletico then came close to extending their advantage. Thibaut Courtois produced an important save, while Ibrahima Konate made a crucial goal-line clearance as Real struggled to contain the hosts.

Real Madrid Fight Back, But Too Late

Jose Mourinho responded with attacking changes as Real Madrid attempted to rescue the derby. The visitors eventually found a way through in the 89th minute when Antonio Rudiger headed Bernardo Silva's free-kick past Jan Oblak.

Suddenly, the final minutes became nervy for Atletico. Real pushed forward looking for an equaliser, but Simeone's team managed the closing stages and protected their lead until the final whistle.

The victory also marked an important result for Simeone against Mourinho. After losing each of their previous three LaLiga meetings during Mourinho's first spell at Real Madrid, Simeone finally got the better of the Portuguese coach in the league.

Atletico Move Above Real Madrid

The Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid result has immediate implications for the LaLiga table. Atletico moved into second place on 16 points, while Real Madrid dropped to third with 15. Barcelona remained five points clear at the summit after their 3-1 victory over Sevilla.

For Atletico, the win was another positive step after a strong run that had already included victories over Real Sociedad and Osasuna. For Real Madrid, it was their second league defeat of the campaign and a frustrating night in which the Huijsen red card proved decisive.
