Axar Patel Holds Nerve as India Escape with Two-Run Win over Japan

India were expected to cruise through their one-off T20I against Japan. Instead, the world champions were pushed all the way to the final ball before securing a two-run victory in a remarkable contest at the Sano International Cricket Ground.

After rain reduced the match to just five overs per side, India could manage only 32/4. Japan then came agonisingly close to completing a stunning upset, finishing on 30/3 as India's experienced spin attack held its nerve.

The result gave India a narrow India vs Japan T20I victory, but Japan's performance ensured that the historic contest was anything but one-sided.

Rain Turns Match Into Five-Over Shootout

The game was delayed for around two and a half hours because of rain and a wet outfield. When play finally began, both sides were given only five overs each, dramatically changing the nature of the contest.

India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bat, but the difficult surface immediately made life uncomfortable for the visitors. The pitch offered significant turn, while the damp outfield made stroke-making and boundary-hitting particularly difficult.

The unusual conditions effectively erased much of the gap in experience between the two teams and gave Japan a genuine opportunity to challenge the reigning T20 world champions.

Japan’s Bowlers Shock India

India's batting innings began disastrously. Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck, while Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan also fell cheaply as Japan's spin-heavy attack repeatedly troubled the Indian batters.

India slipped to 14/3 before captain Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings. He top-scored with 16 from 12 balls, but India could only reach 32/4 from their five overs. Charlie Hara-Hinze was Japan's standout bowler, finishing with two wickets.

For a side boasting some of the world's most explosive T20 batters, the tiny total left India with very little margin for error.

Japan Push India to the Brink

Japan needed only 33 runs to record a memorable victory and began their chase with plenty of belief. India responded with an all-spin attack, but the hosts refused to surrender.

Captain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming kept Japan in the contest with 12 runs, while Benjamin Ito-Davis also contributed as the hosts steadily chipped away at the target. Washington Sundar eventually made the crucial breakthrough, dismissing Kadowaki-Fleming and leaving Japan needing eight runs from the final over.

Suddenly, an unlikely Japan vs India T20I upset was within touching distance.

Axar Patel Holds His Nerve

With eight runs required from six balls, the responsibility fell on veteran spinner Axar Patel. Japan's Alexander Shirai-Patmore and Benjamin Ito-Davis attempted to manufacture the required runs, but Axar kept the ball tight and denied them the boundaries they needed. Japan eventually managed only 30/3, falling two runs short.

The final over also produced controversy. A delivery initially called wide was subsequently overturned and declared a dead ball after India captain Iyer questioned the decision. With such a narrow final margin, the incident became one of the talking points of an already dramatic finish.

Shreyas Iyer and India's Spinners Make the Difference

Iyer's 16 proved to be the highest individual score of the match, earning him the Player of the Match award. His innings may have looked modest by normal T20 standards, but on a slow, turning surface and in a five-over game, every run carried enormous value.

With the bat struggling, India's bowlers ultimately rescued the team. Washington Sundar claimed two wickets, while Axar Patel's controlled final over closed out the game. India successfully defended the lowest total imaginable in the shortened format.

Japan Can Take Plenty From Historic Contest

Although Japan missed out on victory, their performance will be remembered as an important moment for the country's cricket. The match was the first men's T20I meeting between India and Japan, and the hosts took the world's reigning T20 champions to the final delivery.

Japan captain Kadowaki-Fleming said his team was extremely proud after coming so close to an upset, describing the experience of taking the world's best side to the final ball as special.

For India, the India vs Japan T20I result is officially another victory. But the bigger takeaway may be the warning it delivered ahead of the Asian Games: on unfamiliar conditions, even a heavily favoured team can be pushed to its limits. India won. Japan, however, made sure the world took notice.
