Bollywood Loses Veteran Character Actor Bharat Kapoor at 80

Veteran Hindi film actor Bharat Kapoor, known for his steady presence in supporting and villainous roles across decades of Indian cinema, passed away on April 27 in Mumbai at the age of 80.

According to reports, the actor had been unwell for several days prior to his death. While initial accounts cited cardiac arrest, some sources indicated that he succumbed to complications following a brief illness. His passing marks the end of a long and consistent career spanning theatre, television, and film.

Kapoor began his journey in the entertainment industry in the early 1970s and went on to feature in a wide range of Hindi films through the 1990s and beyond. Though rarely cast in leading roles, he became a familiar and dependable face, often portraying antagonists or morally complex supporting characters that added depth to mainstream narratives.

One of his most recognized performances came in Noorie, where his portrayal of a negative character contributed significantly to the emotional weight of the story. He continued to build on this image with roles in films such as Love Story and the critically acclaimed Bazaar, the latter showcasing his ability to deliver restrained and realistic performances.

Kapoor was also part of several multi-starrer productions, including Ghulami and Aakhree Raasta, the latter featuring Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role. In Khuda Gawah, another high-profile project led by Bachchan, Kapoor contributed in a supporting capacity within a large ensemble cast.

Industry colleagues and members of the theatre community remembered him as a disciplined and versatile performer who brought nuance to roles that might otherwise have been one-dimensional.
