Boong’s Historic BAFTA Victory: A Proud Moment for Indian Cinema

The Manipuri-language film Boong has made history on the global film stage by winning the Best Children’s and Family Film award at the prestigious 79th BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Awards 2026 in London. This is a major milestone for Indian cinema, especially for regional films that rarely get recognition on such a celebrated international platform.

Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and backed by well-known Bollywood producer Farhan Akhtar along with co-producers Ritesh Sidhwani, Vikesh Bhutani, Alan McAlex and Shujaat Saudagar, Boong stood out among formidable international contenders including Lilo & Stitch, Zootopia 2 and Arco.

Boong is a coming-of-age drama set in Manipur, telling the heartfelt story of a young boy who embarks on a journey to reunite his family. In his mind, bringing his missing father back home would be the best gift ever for his mother — and through this search, he experiences life in all its complexity.

The film was first screened at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and went on to be featured at numerous film festivals around the world before its theatrical release in India in September 2025.
