China Recruiting Ex-US Federal Employees May Risk the Country as Sensitive Information Might be Shared

A group of companies has been recruiting people who were laid off by the US federal government through a secretive website. The tech firm has listed some jobs that are quite lucrative and can be beneficial for the country. A researcher has identified a campaign that may put national security at stake.

Maxx Lesser, a senior analyst working with Think Tank Foundation, has recently claimed that many companies are putting up with advertisements and trying to recruit people from the US Government. "Part of a broader network of fake consulting and headhunting firms targeting former government employees and AI researchers," claims Maxx.

The Chinese consultancies and recruitment agencies involved in the entire campaign are many however, there is very limited public data available to assess the situation. Starting from digital links to websites hosted on the same server, there were many malpractices for which tracing the companies can be quite challenging.

All the companies that were involved in the process are listed with the same IP address, making it impossible to trace them. Moreover, Simao Intelligence, an Internet service provider, also had shut their website when Reuters wanted to report the issue. Moreover, till now, there is no clear indication of the nature of the relationship between the ISP and the four companies.

Some internal news agencies tried to nab the companies however, they met with a dead end as the addresses led to wrong fields, calling numbers that do not exist anymore and calls that went unanswered. Even more, the jobs have been deleted from LinkedIn, which was the primary source to trace the companies. Maxx shared the reports to Reuters even before it was published. He claimed that there is a well-established network under which the agencies have been working, and there can be challenges in identifying the companies at once.

He claims that "What makes this activity significant, it is that the network seeks to exploit the financial vulnerabilities of former federal workers affected by recent mass layoffs.". The primary risk remains the same as the members of the Federal team can be asked to share sensitive information, which may bring a larger risk or might ask them to direct towards the right group of people that may the information. They are also afraid if any participants are willing to share the sensitive information without the awareness of US.

Chinese Government has, however, denied all the allegations and has claimed that they were unaware of the consultancies working in China. Moreover, Beijing respects the data and security for which they refrain themselves from involving in such matters. CNN also reported that the Russian and Chinese companies have been eyeing on ex-federal employees for which threats have increased.
