Cyclone Montha is rapidly intensifying over the Bay of Bengal, expected to make landfall near Kakinada as a severe storm, prompting multiple coastal states to issue alerts and precautionary measures.
The cyclone storm Montha continues to gather formidable momentum over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As of 2:30 a.m. on October 27, it was advancing west-northwest at approximately 16kmph, the storm currently lies about 600km east-southeast of Chennai, 680 kmph. The storm currently lies about 600 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam, 790 km west of Port Blair, and 850 km south of Gopalpur. IMD’s latest bulletin suggests that Montha will persist in its west-northwest trajectory over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal for the next 12 hours.

When will Cyclone Montha Make Landfall?
In the next 12 hours, Months is projected to move northwards and then north-northwestwards, likely intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday morning. “Continuing to move further north-northwestwards, it is very likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during the evening/night of Tuesday as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph,” the IMD stated.
Cyclone Montha: Which States will be Affected?
Coaster regions along the Bay of Bengal, including Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, are on heightened alert. Emergency forces, including the Indian Army and local authorities, are deploying mitigative measures to curtail potential devastation.
Odisha may witness extremely heavy rainfall on October 28 and 29, as per the IMD’s latest forecast. A yellow alert has been issued for districts such as Cuttack, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Kendrapara. The weather office also warned of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40kmph.
A red alert has been issued for Andhra Pradesh, while orange alerts are in place for Odisha, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall. “Extremely” heavy rainfall is anticipated in isolated parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Telangana. Tamil Nadu is also likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds on October 28.
Meanwhile, West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Bihar are forecasted to receive light to moderate rainfall from October 29 to 31, with isolated heavy downpours in some pockets. Chhattisgarh may endure “extremely” heavy rainfall on October 28.
