Discovering Who You Truly Are And Sisterhood Is The Prime Focus of Big Girls Don’t Cry

‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ is being streamed on Amazon Prime. The web series offers a refreshing perspective on life in a boarding school. The theme of this web series is new as not many stories were previously woven around the lives of girl students in a boarding school.

Nitya Mehra is one of the co-directors of this web series along with Sudhanshu Saria, Karan Kapadia and Kopal Naithani. She has also been to a boarding school and this explains why this theme was chosen. “However, I will say this and I don’t think I have said it enough. When is the last time you saw or read something which was telling the tale of 17-year-old girls set in an Indian context? I haven’t seen it or read it in recent times. Yes, we are watching a lot of American stories but where is the Indian experience?”, she questions.

She believes that school is underrepresented in cinema.

Reviews have begun pouring and it appears viewers have mixed feelings about the web series. ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ follows the life of seven friends Avantika (as Ludo), Akshita (Dia), Dalai (Pluggy), Vidushi (Kavya), Lhakyila (JC), Aneet (Roohi), and Afrah (Noor). They navigate friendships, family, heartbreaks, studies, and love.

The newcomers have done a tremendous job portraying their unique characters and it is difficult to believe that some of the young stars are facing the camera for the first time. They were confident in portraying their individual characters. “Natural” is the appropriate word to describe their acting skills!

#BGDC is slow, lacks form and confusing initially however it picks up pace later on. Some scenes of the girls physically assaulting each other were far-fetched. The latter episodes are far more interesting than the initial ones. It takes time to understand the characters, once done, you’ll tend to take a liking to them gradually.

Discovering who you truly are and sisterhood is the prime focus of the show! The seven friends form a group, supporting each other in times of crisis. Every girl’s journey is different, each one dealing with their struggles in their own unique way. Young and rebellious, they are figuring out their own identities. Some are struggling with their sexual orientation. They are discovering life which can be very daunting at that vulnerable age!

The series makes us ponder on different aspects of our society.

It exhibits that children can become victims of classism in an educational institution. Kids hailing from different socio-economic backgrounds can be treated differently. For instance, Kavya is a scholarship kid, who has to hide her identity in order to fit in or else life could be different for her in Vandana Valley School which mainly comprises privileged students. #BGDC demonstrates that the child’s overall wellbeing is largely influenced by family ties and home environment.

Pooja Bhatt does an excellent job as the stern Principal Anita Verma of Vandana Valley School. Though she is a disciplinarian, she bends whenever it’s necessary. Raima sen has also done justice to her role as a parent.

The camaraderie between the girls is the highlight of the series! ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ is bound to take you back to school days and make you cherish those special school moments.
