Jyoti Malhotra, a travel YouTuber, faces espionage charges for allegedly sharing military data with Pakistan. Her social persona masked a darker narrative under investigation by Indian authorities.
New Delhi: Harish Malhotra, father of Hyoti Malhotra, the YouTuber recently detained for allegedly spying for Pakistan, shared his disbelief and lack of knowledge about his daughter’s actions. In a candid interaction with news agency ANI, he expressed shock over her visits to Pakistan and confessed he had no idea about her social media presence.
“I didn’t know anything about her YouTube or social accounts. She always told me she was going to Delhi,” Harish said, contradicting an earlier statement in which he had mentioned her travel to Pakistan for video shoots. “She mostly filmed her videos at home,” he added with visible distress.
Jyoti, from Hisar in Haryana, is known for her travel channel Travel with Jo, which has close to 400,000 subscribers. Authorities allege that she leaked sensitive Indian military information to Pakistan. The 33-year-old reportedly established contact with a representative from the Pakistan High Commission and visited Pakistan on at least two occasions.
Her Channel featured over 450 videos, including content showcasing her travels across Pakistan. Titles such as Indian Girl in Pakistan, Exploring Lahore, At Katas Raj Temple, and Luxury Bus Ride in Pakistan garnered significant viewership.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Jyoti was employed in Delhi but eventually resigned. Her globetrotting content patent the image of a wanderlust-driven vlogger. However, beneath that veneer may have lain something far more insidious.
Police revealed that Jyoti had visited Kashmir shortly before the devastating April 22 Pahalgam attack. This raised red flags, prompting authorities to investigate any causative link between her visits and the atrocity. Hisar’s Superintendent of Police, Shashank Kumar Sawan, stated that she was being cultivated as a “Strategic asset” by Pakistani intelligence operatives.
She was allegedly in contact with a Pakistani officer stationed at the High Commission during the heightened military face-off that ensued after the Pahalgam tragedy, which claimed 26 lives. Authorities also suspect she may have interacted with prominent figures in Pakistan.
Jyoti is among at least a dozen individuals arrested under allegations of espionage. These arrests arrive amid rising geostrategic strains between India and Pakistan. Following indications of cross-border involvement in the Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting militant bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
In retaliation, Pakistan initiated a significant missile and drone offensive, which was effectively neutralized. India’s counterstrike included targeting airfields within Pakistan’s domain. The hostilities culminated with a ceasefire on May 10.
The saga has cast a tenebrous shadow on digital creators, raising questions about the veracity of online personas and how quickly adventurism can become subversive. As authorities unravel this labyrinthine case, the nation watches with bated breath.
