Heavy Rain Lashes on Country's Capital, IMD Issues Red Alert
Monson hits Delhi as severely strong, and rainfall surges in many parts of the city. Advisories are issued for passengers taking a flight. CM reaches the flood-affected areas to assess the condition.
Pre-monsoon impact in India is quite high, especially for the coastal and Gangetic belts. There are pre-monsoon storms that have created havoc in the past and often claim lives. The year 2025 witnessed a sharp rise in temperatures even before the peak summer. The capital of India witnessed a relief from heat as sudden cells formed over central India, leading to thunderstorms and heavy rain. The IMD has issued a red alert for Delhi on Friday, where gusting winds may be experienced at 70-80 kmph.
The event started around 5 pm in the evening, where most of areas of Delhi experienced an average of 75 kmph of wind speeds and a sudden drop in temperature. Though this gave a sigh of relief to the people but it led to chaos and panic as well. Delhi further recorded 8 cm of rainfall in just 3 hours of cumulative rainfall. The temperatures also dropped from 28 degrees to 19 degrees in those 3 hours.
Areas such as Lajpat Nagar, RK Puram, and Safdarjung witnessed water clogging, which slowed down the traffic movement and led to huge congestion on the streets. Delhi Airport has stated that the brutal rainfall in the city. "Following the advisory issued by the India Meteorological Department this morning, we would like to confirm that the airport is operating as normal, despite some impact on flight operations due to adverse weather conditions. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience. Passengers are requested to stay in touch with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates."
Many airlines later on shared their travel advisory and also informed the passengers to take a prior update for their flight to manage the travel time and reach the airport faster. IMD advised people to stay indoors and not venture around as waterlogging and frequent rainfall can risk the people, and it can also lead to electrocution near the flooded water. North, East, and South India are all set to experience the same storm at some point, as the same cells will be affecting the country sooner or later.
The weather department also warned about soil and crop damage, along with damage to the property and people. Many parts of the city were seen being impacted because of the high wind speeds. Sheds and roofs of under-construction buildings were seen to fly off, leading to safety concerns. CM Rekha Gupta has reached the spots and took account of the situation and the strategies being used to bring the situation back to normal.
