Honeymoon Turns Fatal: Wife Arrested for Alleged Murder of Indore Man in Meghalaya

In a chilling twist to what began as a honeymoon, police officials revealed on Monday that Sonam Raghuvanshi, the wife of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, has been arrested for allegedly plotting her husband’s murder. The incident occurred during their trip to Meghalaya, a popular tourist destination known for its cascading waterfalls and lust valley.

According to the police, Sonam masterminded the murder by hiring contract killers. The couple had gone missing on May 23 while exploring the picturesque Cherrapunjee region. They were last seen checking out of Balaji Homestay, and a rented scooter they had used was later found abandoned at Sohararim.

Sonam was discovered unconscious at a roadside “dhaba” in Gazipur on Saturday night. After receiving medical attention at Ghazipur Medical College, she surrendered to the authorities and was immediately taken into custody. Officials described her demeanor as subdued and evasive during preliminary interrogation.

Meghalaya Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang confirmed the arrest of three other individuals believed to be involved in the crime. One suspect was apprehended in Uttar Pradesh, while the other two were tracked down in Indore. Initial statements from the accused revealed that they had been recruited by Sonam to execute the murder.

Ten days after disappearance, Raja’s body was discovered in a steep gorge beneath the Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arlian. Near the scene, police recovered a blood-stained machete believed to have been used in the attack. The gruesome discovery added a grim dimension to what had initially been treated as a missing persons case.

Adding credibility to the murder theory, a local tourist guide from Mawlakhiat came forward and informed investigators that he had seen the couple on May 23 accompanied by three unfamiliar men. According to his testimony, the group was ascending over 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10am. The guide recognized the couple from an earlier interaction when he had offered his services to them on May 22, but they had chosen another guide.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma acknowledged the efforts of lay enforcement through a post on X.

“Within 7 days, a major breakthrough has been achieved by the #meghalayapolice in the Raja murder case...3 assailants who are from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested, female has surrendered and operation still on to catch 1 more assailant...well done,” he wrote.

As the investigation continues, police are digging deeper into possible motives, digital trails, and financial transactions that could illuminate the premeditation behind this brutal act. Authorities are also pursuing the fourth suspected accomplice, who remains at large.
