Huawei Confirms the Launch of P20 Series on March 27 - Press Invite Hints at Triple Camera Lenses - P20 to Compete with iPhone X and Galaxy S9.

Huawei Technologies Company Limited confirmed the launch of next-generation P20 lineup, which includes the P20 and P20 Plus, on March 27 in Paris. A phrase on the media invite shared by PhoneArena reads, "SEE MOOORE WITH AI", which is definitely catchy. Additionally, the invite shows an image of Eiffel Tower superimposed with three large "O" symbols in the background. Needless to say, the three "O"s suggest the presence of a triple camera setup on the back of the upcoming Huawei P20 lineup of smartphones, instead of dual cameras commonly seen on most phones nowadays.

High-end Triple Lens Camera Developed with Leica

Initially, Huawei had plans to release the P20 lineup at Mobile World Congress in late February this year. However, now it is evident that the world’s third-largest smartphone maker is holding a separate event in Paris on March 27. Huawei is expected to launch three new smartphones under its P20 series, including the standard P20, P20 Plus, and P20 Lite. All three smartphones from the Huawei P20 series are expected to come with a vertically stacked triple rear camera setup certified by Leica, the German company known for making high-end cameras. The P20 Lite smartphone has already been passed through a US FCC (Federal Communications Commission). The phone might come with an iPhone X-like notch on the top, a 5.8 to 6-inch display ( 2280 x 1080) with a 19:9 aspect ratio, and a dual-camera setup on the back.

The other two, namely the P20 and P20 Plus smartphones will come with a triple lens camera system on the back. The camera technology has been developed with Leica. It is said that Huawei’s triple lens camera will have a resolution of 40MP and 5X-hybrid zoom. The front camera on the P20 will be a 24MP unit.

P20 Challenge to iPhone X and Galaxy S9

Other than using a superior camera technology, Huawei is making sure its flagship smartphones will stand out against the Apple iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9. Word on the street is that one of the premium P-series models will feature a new 3D camera dubbed the “Point Cloud Depth Camera” that should be seen as a rival to Apple’s Face ID. The company’s facial recognition system will use fringe protection instead of lasers. The system will essentially create a  map of elevations and depressions of a face to measure 300,000 points in 10 seconds. According to Huawei, its own facial recognition system is more accurate and precise than Apple’s “True Depth Camera” on the iPhone X.

Significance of SEE MOOORE WITH AI
As suggested by the official media invite as well as earlier reports, the upcoming P20 series of smartphones will be powered by Huawei's own Hi-Silicon Kirin 970 processor. This chipset is also present on the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro smartphones. Since the Kirin 970 SoC comes with neural-network processor unit (NPU), it can handle tasks related to AI (Artificial Intelligence) and deep learning.

Codenames and Color Variants for P20
Roland Quandt recently revealed the smartphones' codenames as well as color options. According to him, Huawei P20 is codenamed 'Emily' and it will be available in Ceramic Black and Twilight colors. Huawei P20 Plus is codenamed 'Charlotte' and like the standard P20, it will also be available in Ceramic Black and Twilight colors. Huawei P20 Lite is codenamed 'Anne', and it will be offered in three colors which will include Midnight Black, Klein Blue, and Sakura Pink.

Android 8.0 Oreo OS
All three smartphones of the Huawei P20 series will be pre-installed with Android 8.0 Oreo operating system. The P20 Lite variant is already listed on FCC with Android Oreo.

A lot is still to be explored about the P20, P20 Plus, and P20 Lite. It will definitely be worth the wait to learn more about the company’s P20-series on March 27.
