Inspired by ‘The Odyssey’, Gitanjali Angmo Wants Bollywood to Reimagine India's Classics

Gitanjali Angmo, educator and wife of environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, has praised filmmaker Christopher Nolan's latest release, The Odyssey, while urging Indian filmmakers to draw greater inspiration from the country's own literary and cultural heritage.

Sharing her thoughts after watching the film, Angmo described it as an example of cinema that combines visual spectacle with timeless storytelling. She said films rooted in mythology and history have the power to connect audiences across generations when handled with creative ambition.

Her remarks also included a broader reflection on the Hindi film industry. Angmo suggested that Bollywood has yet to fully realize the cinematic potential of India's vast collection of epics, legends and historical narratives, arguing that these stories deserve large-scale adaptations capable of resonating with global audiences.

Alongside her comments, Angmo recalled meeting Christopher Nolan during his visit to India in 2024 and shared a photograph from the interaction. She expressed admiration for the director's work and credited him with bringing classic narratives to the screen in a way that feels both grand and emotionally engaging.

Nolan's The Odyssey, based on Homer's ancient Greek epic, has generated widespread discussion for its ambitious scale and interpretation of one of literature's best-known adventures. Angmo's observations have since sparked conversations online about whether Indian cinema should invest more heavily in adapting its own rich mythological and historical traditions for contemporary audiences.
