Israel to Honour Indian Flydubai Pilot Smit Machchhar with Civilian Heroism Award

Israel will honour Indian Flydubai pilot Smit Machchhar with the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism for his extraordinary courage in helping avert a mid-air disaster despite suffering serious injuries.

Israel to Honour Indian Flydubai Pilot Smit Machchhar with Civilian Heroism Award

Indian airline captain Smit Machchhar is set to receive Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism after displaying remarkable courage during a mid-air emergency aboard a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv. Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the honour, praising the captain’s bravery and professionalism during an incident that could have ended in disaster.

The announcement follows an alleged attack on Machchhar by his co-pilot inside the cockpit of a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight on September 30, 2026. Despite being seriously injured, the Indian captain managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to step in and help bring the situation under control.

A Brave Response in a Life-Threatening Situation

The incident took place aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 people. During the journey, the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar, leading to a dangerous situation in the cockpit and putting everyone on board at risk.

Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to reach the cockpit door and unlock it. This gave passengers an opportunity to enter and help restrain the attacker. Two other Flydubai pilots who happened to be travelling on the same aircraft then took control of the flight.

The plane eventually made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Thanks to the captain’s actions and the intervention of passengers, crew members and fellow pilots, a potentially devastating situation was brought under control.

Israeli President Praises the Captain’s Courage

Announcing the award, President Herzog commended Machchhar for his courage and professionalism, noting the important role he played in preventing a possible aviation disaster. He also wished the captain a speedy recovery and said he would personally present the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism once Machchhar had regained his strength.

The award recognises extraordinary acts of bravery by civilians who put themselves at risk to protect others. Machchhar’s response to the emergency has drawn attention to the courage and presence of mind he demonstrated despite being seriously injured.

Leaders in India and Israel Applaud His Actions

Machchhar’s bravery has also earned praise from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Both leaders acknowledged his determination to protect the lives of those aboard the aircraft, even as he faced a grave personal threat.

The incident has highlighted the immense responsibility carried by pilots, particularly when unexpected emergencies arise thousands of feet above the ground. It has also demonstrated how the quick thinking and cooperation of passengers and crew members can make a crucial difference in a crisis.

As Machchhar continues his recovery, Israel’s decision to honour him serves as recognition of his courage and commitment to protecting others. What began as a frightening in-flight emergency has become a story of extraordinary bravery, teamwork and the human instinct to help others in the face of danger.
