Kannada Actress Ranya Rao Arrested for Smuggling Gold from Dubai, Expected to Seek Bail on Thursday
Kannada actress Ranya Rao has been arrested for smuggling gold worth Rs. 12.86 crore. The actress used VIP channels to ensure a smooth exit from the airport.
Ranya Rao, an actress and the daughter of a senior IPS officer, was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence at Bengaluru International Airport after she was found in possession of 14.8 kg of gold.
She arrived in Bengaluru from Dubai on an Emirates flight on March 3, 2025. She was just one step away from clearing security and tried to use her connections to evade the security check. Gold bars weighing 14.8 kg were found concealed on her person.
“Upon examination, gold bars weighing 14.2 kg were found ingeniously concealed on (her) person,” the DRI said in an official statement.
Authorities conducted a search at the Lavelle residence in Bengaluru, where she resides with her husband. More gold and cash were recovered from her home.
The search resulted in the seizure of gold jewelry worth Rs. 2.06 crore and Indian currency amounting to Rs. 2.67 crore. The total value of the seizure in the case stands at Rs. 17.29 crore.
Ranya Rao traveled to Dubai four times in 15 days, which made authorities suspicious. In addition, she was seen wearing the same clothes every time she traveled to Dubai.
Authorities are also investigating whether she was acting alone or was part of a larger network.
Ranya Rao was presented before an economic offences court, which remanded her to 14 days in judicial custody. She is expected to seek bail on Thursday.
