Kate Winslet Makes Directorial Debut with Emotional Christmas Drama Goodbye June

Kate Winslet stepped behind the camera for the first time with Goodbye June, a Christmas drama centred on a family coming together in the aftermath of loss.

The screenplay was written by Winslet’s son, Joe Anders, who first drafted the story at just 19 years old. The narrative draws partly from the family’s experience following the death of Winslet’s mother, who battled ovarian cancer.

At the movie’s premiere, Winslet said, “I just wanted to make a film that felt authentic and real.”

“I also didn't want to make a story that was about someone who dies, because it's really not. It's actually about the life that is given to the people who are left behind.”

 “And we need to give credit and honour the people who do that incredible work, especially our palliative care workers,” she expressed, highlighting their recognition.

Joe Anders wrote the story and gave it to his mother for feedback, never imagining it would be made into a movie.

 “I didn't even know if I could write a screenplay. I just really wanted to give it my best shot. And the fact that it's been made into a movie is insane,” said Anders, who is now 21.

Winslet describes the finished film as “sophisticated, graceful, and warm.” The story follows four siblings as they navigate the emotional turbulence that comes with their mother’s declining health, finding pockets of joy, pain, humour, and hope along the way.

The film features Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, Stephen Merchant, Fisayo Akinade, Jeremy Swift, and Raza Jaffrey.

 It was filmed over a period of 35 days.

The film, premiering on Netflix on December 24, 2025, marks a deeply personal project for the Oscar-winning actress.

It will be wonderful to witness the ‘Titanic’ star evolve from an actress to a first-time director.
