Kempegowda Airport Introduces Strict Pick-Up Rules: New Fees, Lane Controls & Safety Protocols

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is set to implement a revamped pick-up system from December 8, bringing in stricter controls, time-bound access, and penalties for overstaying vehicles. As passenger numbers continue to surge, the airport operator, Bangalore International Airport Ltd. (BIAL), has unveiled these measures to decongest kerbside areas, enhance safety, and expedite passenger movement.

A Structured System to Reduce Chaos

According to BIAL, a new lane-segregation framework will be activated at Terminals 1 and 2. This structure aims to curb indiscipline, discourage unauthorised halts, and streamline vehicular circulation in front of arrival gates. The redesign is intended to minimise dwell time, prevent lane blockage and discourage misuse of the high-traffic pick-up corridors.

Private vehicles will be allowed to enter the arrival pick-up lanes freely, but only for a limited duration. The airport is offering an eight-minute complimentary window, notably more generous than international benchmarks. Any car that exceeds this grace period will incur charges:

• Rs 150 for overstays between 8–13 minutes
• Rs 300 for overstays between 13–18 minutes

Vehicles lingering beyond 18 minutes will be towed to the nearest police station, and owners will be liable for towing fees and statutory fines.

Commercial Vehicles Assigned to Designated Zones

In a clear effort to reduce kerbside congestion, BIAL has mandated that all commercial fleets, including yellow-board taxis and electric cabs, must wait exclusively in authorised parking areas. To maintain a friction-free ick-up experience, the first 10 minutes of parking will be free.

For commercial operators:

• Terminal 1 vehicles must use P3 and P4 parking zones
• Terminal 2 vehicles must proceed to P2

This arrangement aims to separate private cars and commercial fleets, preventing traffic overlap and bottlenecks.

Why These Changes Were Necessary

BIAL revealed that the airport has recently seen a spike in unauthorised stopping, Kerbside queueing and roadside pick-ups near arrival gates, all of which result in crowding, delays, and safety hazards. The intensified travel season has magnified these issues, pushing the operator to adopt firmer traffic governance.

Hari Marar, MD & CEO of BIAL, emphasised that these measures are not merely enforcement tactics but essential steps to preserve order and protect passengers. He highlighted that when drivers adhere to designated rules, the entire system becomes more efficient, predictable, and secure.

Guidelines for Smooth Passenger Flow

To preserve a seamless journey for travellers, BIAL has urged commuters and drivers to rely solely on sanctioned pick-up points and authorised aggregators. Approved operators include Airport Taxi, Uber, Ola, Quick Ride, OHM electric cabs and WTI cabs.

Any departure from the revised protocol, whether obstructing lanes, halting in restricted areas or overstaying the permitted duration, will trigger penalties applicable to both individuals and commercial operators.

With these revamped mechanisms, Kempegowda Airport seeks to craft a more disciplined, orderly and commuter-friendly arrival experience.
