Meta’s AI Chatbots to Remember, Respond, and Reconnect: A Sneak Peek into “Project Omni”

Meta is developing interactive AI chatbots under “Project Omni” that recall past chats, send follow-ups, and offer personalized interactions—all while aiming to boost engagement, retention, and future monetization.

Meta’s AI Chatbots to Remember, Respond, and Reconnect: A Sneak Peek into “Project Omni”

Meta is reportedly developing a new generation of interactive and customisable AI chatbots that could spontaneously message users first, based on previous exchanges. These virtual personas won’t just chat, they will recall your past preferences and follow up on earlier conversations, creating a quasi-human continuity in interaction.

This intriguing feature was initially spotted by Business Insider and later corroborated by Meta itself. Internally referred to as “Project Omni”, the initiative is guided by a vision to “provide value for users and ultimately help to improve re-engagement and user retention,” as outlined by the data annotation firm Alignerr.

One example cited includes an AI bot named “The Maestro of Movie Magic”, which could send a note saying, “I hope you’re having a harmonious day! I wanted to check in and see if you’ve discovered any new favourite soundtracks or composers recently. Or perhaps you’d like some recommendations for your next movie night? Let me know, and I’ll be happy to help!”

In a statement, a Meta spokesperson added, “After you initiate a conversation, AIs in Meta AI Studio can follow up with you to share ideas or ask additional questions. This allows you to fluxline exploring topics of interest and engage in more meaningful conversations with the AIs across our apps.”

However, users won’t be randomly spammed. The chatbots will only initiate follow-ups if the user has already started a conversation and sent at least five messages within a 14-day window. This safeguard ensures that only receptive users will be engaged further.

The initiative is part of Meta AI Studio, a no-code platform introduced last year that endows anyone to craft their own AI personas, with built-in memory, distinct advisors, users can design bots that serve personal or public-facing functions. These bots can be kept private, shared via direct links pr stories, or showcased on Instagram and Facebook profiles.

Much like existing platforms such as Character.AI and Replika, Meta’s experimental chatbots aim to simulate more serendipitous, humanlike interaction—possibly addressing what CEO Mark Zuckerberg has referred to as a “loneliness epidemic.”

When questioned about ethical safeguards, Meta referred to disclaimers that caution users: The bots “may be inaccurate or inappropriate and should not be used to make important decisions.” They are not certified professionals or advisors.

With revenue projections of $2–3 billion in 2025 from generative AI products, and a potential valuation reaching $1.4 trillion by 2035, the long-term vision likely includes ads, subscriptions, and enhanced AI commerce, though no definitive monetisation strategy has been confirmed.
