Reliance May Sue Techie for Demanding 1 Crore in Return for The JioHotstar Domain

After a long wait, Jio is all set to acquire Hotstar as BCCI canceled Jio for direct broadcasting of the Cricket matches. An unnamed techie had purchased the JioHotstar domain name and is now demanding close to 1 crore for returning the domain name.

The man is based out of Delhi and has purchased JioHostar domain name by analyzing the acquisition and merger. The man had threatened reliance industries in an email where he demanded 1 crore for his Cambridge studies. The man could not be tracked but Reliance Industries has now changed the game and claimed to sue the techie.

The jioHotstar domain has a simple design page where the message pops up and aims toward the board-level members of Reliance Industries. According to the techie, the domain was purchased in the year 2023 just after they got the news of Jio being banned from streaming cricket matches.

The man wrote "When I saw this domain become available, I felt things might just fall into place. My intention of buying this domain was simple: if this merger happens, I might be able to fulfill my dream of studying at Cambridge,"

Reliance Industries did not want to fall prey to this and emailed the techie with a threatening email where informing him to take legal action. In response, Reliance Industries claimed "The request has been denied. Reliance will proceed with legal action. I hope they will reconsider this kind request. I wish such a large group could help. Thank you to all who shared and sent kind words. I don't have the power to stand against Reliance,"

The techie said he did not violate any trademark as JioHotstar did not even exist back then. "I don't feel I infringed any trademark when I bought this in 2023, since JioHotstar was not even in existence at that time. Nobody had a trademark for JioHotstar when I bought it. I might automatically lose access to this domain in a few hours. If any legal professional could help, I would be grateful,"
