Lisa Kudrow’s character in FRIENDS was known for being eccentric and unpredictable, with a cheerful vibe. She often thought differently from the rest of the group, making her the most unique.
In reality, Kudrow took a long time to fully understand Phoebe. It took her almost ten years to grasp the depth of her character.
Speaking with Lily Tomlin in an interview, Lisa explained that many people thought Phoebe was a ditz, but she never agreed with that view.
When asked who called Phoebe a ditz, she replied, “Everybody. In 1994, it was like, ‘I love her. She’s a ditz.’ And it’s like, yeah, okay, that was what a ditz was to us—someone who wasn’t toeing the line.”
Lisa believed that Phoebe Buffay was far from stupid. She recalled that in 1994, the term was casually used for anyone who didn’t conform, but she believed Phoebe was far from foolish. Instead, she saw her as insightful, unconventional, and emotionally intelligent.
“At first, Phoebe was very, very far from me. It took a lot of work to justify the things she would say and do. Not in an irritating way—it was fun. Over the course of 10 years, a little bit of her came into me. I lightened up a little more and read some books on spirituality and things, just to try to understand her,” she said.
Phoebe was a musician who juggled numerous jobs throughout the years. She was quirky, impulsive, and had a whimsical imagination. She also had a distinct taste in music, often writing songs with unconventional and humorous lyrics.
Her friends Rachel, Monica, Joey, Chandler and Ross loved her for warmth, authenticity and weirdness. She was the missing piece that balanced the group.
Lisa won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for portraying Phoebe in FRIENDS. Phoebe Buffay has since been recognized as one of the greatest television characters of all time.
Throughout the nineties and beyond, Phoebe made a lasting cultural impact world over. Fans adored her positivity, honesty, and unexpected logic, all of which added a unique flavour to FRIENDS and helped make the series a global phenomenon.
