Trump Honours Musk, Google Co-Founder and Other Tech Leaders with Top US Science Medals
Donald Trump has awarded six technology leaders, including Elon Musk, Sergey Brin and Satya Nadella, the US National Medal of Science or National Medal of Technology and Innovation for their contributions to science and technology.
US President Donald Trump has awarded the country’s highest science and technology honours to six prominent technology executives, including SpaceX chief Elon Musk, Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. The awards were presented on October 8 at the “Science: A New Golden Age” summit in Washington, DC.
Musk, Brin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and AMD CEO Lisa Su received the National Medal of Science. Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell and Nadella were awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, recognising their contributions to technology, engineering and industry.
During the ceremony, Trump praised the recipients for advancing American technological capabilities and described Musk as a modern-day Thomas Edison. He credited the honourees with helping shape the country’s technological future and strengthening its position in global competition.
Recognition for Contributions to Science and Technology
According to the White House, the National Medal of Science recognises outstanding achievements in scientific research and engineering. The National Medal of Technology and Innovation honours individuals whose innovations have contributed to technological progress and economic development.
The White House highlighted Musk’s work in space exploration, intelligent systems and communications. Brin was recognised for foundational work in information retrieval and data processing, while Huang received the award for advances in graphics processing and parallel computing. Su was honoured for her contributions to semiconductor engineering and high-performance computing.
Dell was recognised for expanding access to personal and enterprise computing, while Nadella was cited for his leadership at Microsoft and the development of large-scale cloud computing infrastructure.
Awards Come Amid Close Ties Between Washington and Silicon Valley
The ceremony took place as the Trump administration continues to pursue closer cooperation with the technology industry, particularly in artificial intelligence, semiconductors and advanced computing.
Trump has pledged to strengthen US leadership in artificial intelligence and reduce regulatory barriers to technological development. Several executives honoured at the event have also had business or political connections with the administration.
Musk, who previously served as an adviser to Trump and led the Department of Government Efficiency initiative, had a public disagreement with the president over government spending and tax policy. The two have since repaired their relationship, and Trump praised Musk’s contributions during the ceremony.
Awards Coincide With H-1B Visa Restrictions
The awards were announced on the same day the administration said it was suspending Microsoft and other major technology companies from using the H-1B visa system, citing alleged misuse of the programme. The visa category allows US employers to hire skilled foreign workers.
The timing highlights a contrast between the administration’s recognition of technology leaders, several of whom were born outside the United States, and its restrictions affecting companies that recruit international talent. Five of the six award recipients were born outside the country, according to Al Jazeera.
The National Medal of Science was first awarded in 1963, while the National Medal of Technology and Innovation was introduced in 1985. Both are among the United States’ highest honours for achievements in science and technology.
