Trump Offers US Help to Russia after Suspected Plague Death in Siberia

US President Donald Trump has offered American assistance to Russia as authorities investigate the death of a laboratory worker at a plague research institute in Siberia and impose precautionary quarantines.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump said Washington would help Russia deal with the situation, describing the disease as a serious problem. He said the United States was prepared to provide assistance "as much as we can."

Suspected Plague Case Under Investigation

The incident centres on a 28-year-old laboratory worker who was employed at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Russia's Siberian region. She became seriously ill and later died after developing pneumonia.

Russian authorities have not confirmed that she had pneumonic plague. The country's public health agency has described her illness as pneumonia of unknown origin and said testing did not identify microorganisms associated with her work.

Reports in Russian media have alleged that the woman may have been exposed to the plague bacterium after accidentally breaking a test tube containing the pathogen at the research facility. That account has not been independently confirmed.

Nearly 200 People Under Observation

The death prompted Russian authorities to take precautionary measures in the Irkutsk region. A medical facility where the woman was treated was quarantined, while people who may have come into contact with her were placed under medical observation.

Reports indicate that nearly 200 people have been monitored. Russian officials have said those being observed have not shown signs of the suspected infection and that the epidemiological situation remains stable.

Several hospitals and other facilities have also introduced precautionary measures as authorities work to determine whether there was any exposure to the plague bacterium.

White House Monitoring Situation

The Trump administration has been closely monitoring developments in Russia. US health and national security agencies have been seeking additional information about the death and the measures taken by Russian authorities.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the situation was not considered an immediate cause for alarm but warranted close attention. The White House has also been assessing the available information and possible responses.

Trump's offer of assistance comes despite continuing tensions between Washington and Moscow over Russia's war in Ukraine. The president has nevertheless repeatedly indicated that he is willing to maintain communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

No Confirmed Outbreak

There is currently no official confirmation of a pneumonic plague outbreak in the region. Russian authorities have said the situation is under control, while US officials have stressed that more information is needed before determining the potential threat.

Pneumonic plague is a serious bacterial infection that can spread through respiratory particles, but it can be treated with antibiotics when diagnosed promptly. US officials have said the reported incident remains under observation as Russian authorities continue testing and monitoring people who may have been exposed.
