Trump Says Buyer Identified for TikTok's US Operations, Details Pending

Donald Trump confirms a buyer has been found for TikTok's US branch, pending China’s approval. The divestment aligns with national security law, though broader US-China tensions delay progress.

Trump Says Buyer Identified for TikTok's US Operations, Details Pending

Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently declared that a buyer has been identified for the American operations of TikTok, the popular video-sharing platform owned by a Chinese conglomerate, ByteDance Ltd. However, he stated that specific details regarding the transaction will remain confidential for the next two weeks.

“We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way. I think I'll need probably China's approval, and I think President Xi will probably do it,” Trump remarked during an interview on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. “It's a group of very wealthy people.” Although the segment aired on Sunday, the interview was recorded on Friday.

This development follows Trump’s prior decision to extend, for the third time, a deadline given to ByteDance to divest its U.S.-based TikTok operations. The extension grants the company a total of 90 days beyond the initial deadlines of June 19. The mandated sale stems from legislation passed by Congress last year, citing potential national security implications tied to foreign-owned digital platforms operating in the United States. The law permitted the president to issue one extension, which Trump has now invoked multiple times amid an evolving landscape.

Progress on the deal has experienced a significant slowdown, largely due to growing tensions between Washington and Beijing. The bilateral friction, intensified by disputes over tariffs and trade policies, has created a convoluted backdrop for negotiations. Despite this, hopes for a resolution remain, especially with Trump’s revelation of a buyer.

Before the introduction of sweeping tariffs in April, discussions regarding TikTok’s sale were reportedly advancing. A consortium of major American investors, comprising Oracle Corporation, Blackstone Inc., and Horowitz, was said to be front-running the negotiations. However, the momentum was disrupted as geopolitical complexities overshadowed economic interests.

When approached for further clarity on Trump’s recent comments, the White House declined to issue a formal statement. The absence of confirmation has left many observers speculating about the identities of the involved parties and the terms of the deal.

In the interim, ByteDance faces continued pressure to meet regulatory expectations while safeguarding its commercial foothold in the U.S. market. The future of TikTok’s American operations now hinges not only on financial and legal agreements but also on international diplomacy and cross-border regulatory acquiescence.
