Ukraine’s Long-Planned Drone Offensive Deals Heavy Blow to Russian Airbases

Ukraine's precision drone strike, a year and a half in the making, devastated Russian military airbases, marking a "brilliant" operation that President Zelensky says was entirely "justified" and "deserved."

Ukraine’s Long-Planned Drone Offensive Deals Heavy Blow to Russian Airbases

Kyiv: Ukraine has launched one of its most elaborate and far-reaching attacks yet in its ongoing conflict with Russia, targeting military airbases deep inside Russian territory. The large-scale drone strike, carried out over the weekend, reached thousands of kilometres from the front line and was hailed by President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “brilliant” military achievement.

Zelensky confirmed that the operation, code-named “Spider’s web”, was meticulously orchestrated, involving 117 drones and an equal number of drone operations. The targets included Russian airbases that host strategic cruise missile carriers, facilities critical to Moscow’s long-range aerial assault capabilities.

According to the Ukrainian president, the plan took more than 18 months to develop, involving extensive coordination, stealthy logistics, and careful timing. “Our people operated across several Russian regions—in three different time zones,” he shared in a statement on X. “The preparation took over a year and a half. Planning, organisation, and every detail were perfectly executed. It can be said with confidence that this was a unique operation.”

He further noted, "It’s genuinely satisfying when something I authorized a year and six months ago comes to fruition and deprives Russians of over forty units of strategic aviation. We will continue this work."

The scale and precision of the operation signify a sharp escalation in Ukraine’s capacity to conduct asymmetric warfare. Striking so far behind enemy lines represents a tactical evolution, demonstrating Kyiv’s growing technological prowess and operational sophistication.

The strike was described by Ukrainian officials as not bold but deliberate. Zelensky asserted that the Russian losses were justified and deserved, underlining the moral clarity with which Ukraine views its military responses.

In a further strategic move, Ukraine ensured the safety of operatives involved. Zelensky revealed that individuals who assisted with intelligence or support for the drone strikes were evacuated from Russian territory ahead of time and relocated to secure zones.

Military analysts believe this unprecedented offensive may set a new precedent in the war, which has increasingly relied on unmanned aerial technology. The use of swarms of drones to dismantle key air infrastructure reflects a paradigm shift in modern warfare, where mobility, intelligence, and precision often outweigh brute force.

This campaign, meticulously constructed and fiercely executed, underscores Ukraine’s intent to dismantle Russia’s strategic aviation capacity while sending a clear message: long-range defense is no longer a Russian advantage, and retaliation will come with sophisticated, far-reaching consequences.
