Apple has officially unveiled its first in-house modem chip, marking a significant step forward in reducing its dependence on Qualcomm, whose chips support competing Andriod devices.

This custom-designed modem will power the newly introduced iPhone 16e, priced at $599. According to Apple executives, this technology will gradually be integrated into various Apple products in the coming years, though specific timelines remain undisclosed.

The modem chip is part of Apple’s cutting-edge C1 subsystem, a sophisticated collection of components that includes processors and memory. Apple’s vice president of iPhone product marketing, Kaiann Drance, stated that the iPhone 16e is equipped with the same A18 processor as the broader iPhone to date. She also confirmed that the new device will feature Apple’s latest advancements in artificial intelligence.

Developing modem chips is an intricate process, as they must immaculate function across a vast network of carriers in multiple countries. Only a select few global tech giants, including Samsung Electronics, MediaTek, and Huawei Technologies, have successfully created their modem chips.

For years, Apple relied on Qualcomm’s modem technology, which also supports Android smartphones and Windows laptops that rival Apple’s ecosystem. Despite a prolonged legal dispute with Qualcomm, Apple eventually settled and signed a supply agreement in 2019 after Intel’s attempt to produce a viable alternative fell short.

Now, Apple believes it has crafted an advanced modem that will serve as the foundation for its wireless technology moving forward.

Pioneering a New Platform With Global Reach

The C1 subsystem is Apple’s most intricate technological undertaking to date. Its baseband modem is manufactured using an advanced 4-nanometer chipmaking process, while its transceiver is built using 7-nanometer technology. John Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, highlighted the complexity of this innovation in an interview from Apple’s silicon lab in Sunnyvale, California.

To ensure global compatibility, the chip underwent rigorous testing with 180 carriers across 55 countries.

“We build a platform for generations,” Srouji emphasized. “C1 is the start, and we’re going to keep improving that technology each generation so that it becomes a platform for us that will be used to truly discern this technology for our products.”

A Gradual Transition Away from Qualcomm

Qualcomm has indicated to investors that its share of Apple’s modem business could drop from the current 100% to as low as 20% by next year, as its licensing agreement with Apple remains in effect until at least 2027.

Following Apple’s announcement, Qualcomm’s stock saw a modest 1% rise, while Apple’s shares remained largely unchanged.

Srouji reiterated that Apple’s goal is not to replicate existing modem technology but to create a solution tailored to its biome.

“We’re not the merchant vendor to compete with Qualcomm and MediaTek and others. I believe we’re building something truly differentiating that our customer will benefit from,” he said.

Apple’s decision to develop its modem represents a strategic move toward greater autonomy, allowing the company to optimize performance, efficiency, and user experience on its terms. While Qualcomm’s technology will persist to play a role in the immediate future, Apple’s long-term vision is to redefine wireless connectivity within its product lineup.
