Manchester City Beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield as Haaland, Doku and Cherki Shine

Manchester City silenced Anfield with a convincing 3-0 victory over Liverpool on Sunday, October 11, delivering a major statement in the Premier League title race. After a tense first half, City found their rhythm following Liverpool’s second-half red card, with Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki all getting on the scoresheet.

The result was significant for more than just the three points. Manchester City arrived at Anfield under intense scrutiny following a recent verdict concerning the club’s alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations, which City have appealed. Despite the hostile atmosphere, Enzo Maresca’s side kept their focus and produced a clinical performance when the opportunities arrived.

Liverpool Start Strong but City Hold Firm

Liverpool began with plenty of energy, backed by a passionate Anfield crowd determined to make life difficult for the visitors. The home side pressed aggressively and looked to take advantage of any uncertainty in City’s defence, creating an intense opening period.

Manchester City, however, weathered the early pressure without losing their composure. Their defensive organisation helped keep Liverpool from turning their promising spells into a breakthrough, while their midfield gradually found ways to control possession and slow the pace of the contest.

The first half ended without a goal, leaving the match finely balanced. Liverpool had shown intent, but City remained dangerous, waiting for the right moment to turn their control into clear scoring opportunities.

Ryan Gravenberch Red Card Changes the Game

The decisive shift came in the 62nd minute when Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Doku. The dismissal left Liverpool with 10 players and made an already difficult challenge against the league leaders even tougher.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola questioned the decision after the match, arguing that the first yellow card had been harsh. He said the game effectively became two different contests: one before the dismissal and another after it.

City wasted little time taking advantage of their numerical superiority. The visitors moved the ball forward with greater confidence, stretched Liverpool’s defensive shape and began finding the spaces that had been harder to exploit earlier in the match.

Erling Haaland Breaks the Deadlock

Manchester City finally took the lead in the 65th minute. Doku drove into the penalty area, and his attempted effort was deflected into Haaland’s path. The Norwegian striker reacted quickly and fired a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Alisson to make it 1-0.

The goal gave City the breakthrough they had been searching for and shifted the pressure firmly onto Liverpool. Haaland’s finish also underlined the importance of having a striker who can react instantly when a chance appears, even in a crowded penalty area.

For City, the opening goal brought relief and momentum. Liverpool had worked hard to keep the match level, but once the visitors found a way through, the contest began to open up.

Jérémy Doku Scores a Stunning Second

City doubled their advantage just three minutes later, and this time the goal was all about individual quality. Doku collected the ball outside the box and curled a superb long-range effort into the far top corner, leaving Alisson with little chance of stopping it.

The Belgian winger had already played a role in the opening goal, but his strike made him one of the standout performers of the afternoon. His pace and direct running gave Liverpool problems, particularly after the home side went down to 10 men.

At 2-0, Manchester City had a firm grip on the game. Liverpool needed a quick response, but the numerical disadvantage made it difficult for them to regain control or commit enough players forward without leaving gaps at the back.

Rayan Cherki Seals Manchester City’s Win

Rayan Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute with a moment of individual brilliance. After receiving the ball from Josko Gvardiol, the French midfielder used his close control and footwork to evade Jeremie Frimpong before finishing calmly past Alisson.

It was an emphatic end to a second half in which City made their advantage count. Cherki’s goal put the result beyond doubt and capped a performance that combined defensive discipline with sharp attacking play.

The three goals came in a 13-minute spell, turning a closely fought match into a comfortable victory for the visitors. Liverpool had competed well in the opening stages, but City’s ability to capitalise on key moments ultimately made the difference.

Manchester City Maintain Perfect Premier League Start

The win extended Manchester City’s record to six victories from six Premier League matches, giving them 18 points and keeping them three points ahead of second-placed Arsenal. It also marked consecutive league victories at Anfield for the first time since 1953, adding another notable achievement to the result.

The performance was especially important given the attention surrounding the club away from the pitch. City have appealed the independent commission’s verdict concerning financial rule breaches, and the club continues to deny wrongdoing. On the field, however, Maresca’s players showed they could block out the noise and concentrate on the job in front of them.

For Liverpool, the defeat ended their unbeaten start under Iraola and highlighted the challenge of competing with City when a match swings against them. Gravenberch’s dismissal was a major turning point, but the hosts will also need to find ways to turn their early attacking pressure into goals.

Manchester City leave Anfield with three valuable points, a clean sheet and another confident step in their title challenge. With Haaland, Doku and Cherki all contributing, the league leaders have once again shown how quickly they can punish opponents when the game opens up.
