Trump's comments came after Republican Senator Rand Paul said he intended to ask the Justice Department to pursue criminal charges against Fauci.
The controversy centres on a Senate hearing examining the origins of COVID-19, decisions made during the pandemic, and allegations surrounding US-funded research connected to China. During the hearing, Fauci repeatedly declined to answer questions, invoking the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 100 times, according to reports.
