Trump Targets Norway with Fresh Insults after Missing Out on Nobel Peace Prize

Donald Trump has criticised Norway over his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize, using derogatory language and saying he does not want Norwegian immigrants in the US. His remarks have raised questions about diplomatic relations and immigration policy.

Trump Targets Norway with Fresh Insults after Missing Out on Nobel Peace Prize

US President Donald Trump has launched a fresh verbal attack on Norway, describing the country in vulgar terms and saying he does not want Norwegian immigrants in the United States. His remarks came after he again linked his dissatisfaction over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize to the country that hosts the award committee.

Trump made the comments at a political rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, October 25, ahead of the upcoming US midterm elections. While discussing immigration and unrest in France, he said he would welcome people from certain countries but exclude Norwegians because he had not received the prestigious peace award.

“Norway has become a shit house country, actually,” Trump said, repeating a derogatory expression he has previously used when referring to Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

Trump Links Immigration Remarks to Nobel Prize Decision

During the rally, Trump directly connected his position on Norwegian immigrants to the Nobel Peace Prize committee’s decision not to award him the honour. His comments suggested that his frustration over the result had become part of his broader criticism of Norway.

However, there was no indication that the Trump administration had introduced, or was preparing to introduce, an official policy specifically restricting Norwegian immigrants from entering the United States. His remarks were made during a political speech and should not be interpreted as a formal change in immigration rules.

The comments also came amid Trump's wider criticism of immigration, which he has repeatedly identified as a major issue in his domestic political agenda. At the rally, he referred to unrest in France while arguing for stricter controls over who should be allowed to enter the United States.

Disappointment Over Nobel Peace Prize Continues

Trump has repeatedly expressed his belief that he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his claimed role in helping resolve international conflicts. Earlier in October, after the award was announced, he criticised the decision and described it as an “indelible stain” on Norway.

At a rally in Syracuse, New York, on October 9, Trump argued that the United States, represented by him as president, should have received the award. He also questioned the selection of the recipient and accused the decision-makers of discrediting the prize.

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Navi Pillay, the former United Nations human rights official who chaired a UN commission of inquiry into the situation in the Palestinian territories. Trump had previously voiced his disappointment over being overlooked for the honour.

Although the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, the selection is made by an independent five-member committee appointed by Norway's parliament. The distinction is important because the committee's award decision is not the same as a decision by the Norwegian government.

Norway's Economic Position Contrasts With Trump's Remarks

Norway is one of the world's high-income economies, with a substantial sovereign wealth fund built largely from its petroleum revenues. According to the Reuters report, the country's sovereign wealth fund recorded a profit of 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns, equivalent to approximately $184.3 billion, during the first half of 2026.

The country's economic standing contrasts with Trump's derogatory description, which formed part of his criticism following the Nobel decision.

Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a representative of the Norwegian Nobel Committee had not immediately responded to requests for comment outside regular office hours, according to Reuters.

Trump's latest remarks add to the public dispute that has developed since the Nobel Peace Prize announcement. It remains unclear whether the comments will lead to any diplomatic response from Oslo or affect relations between the United States and Norway.
